Somerville Mining Complex is comprised of Somerville South and Somerville North mines, two surface operations located in Gibson County near Oakland City, Ind. In 2007, the mine shipped a total of 5.0 million tons of medium-sulfur coal to a variety of electricity generating and industrial customers, including Public Service of Indiana, Indianapolis Power & Light, ALCOA, Louisville Gas & Electric, Aventine and Hercules.
Both mines are truck and shovel operations that operate on two shifts year round. Somerville South's employees number 100 and North Mine's employees also total 100. The mine has 21 million tons of recoverable reserves.
Somerville South and North Mines are operated by United Minerals Co. LLC, which is 75 percent owned by Black Beauty Coal, the largest coal producer in the Illinois Basin. Black Beauty is a subsidiary of St. Louis-based Peabody Energy, the world's largest private-sector coal company, with 2007 sales of 238 million tons of coal and $4.6 billion in revenues. Its coal products fuel approximately 10 percent of all U.S. Electricity and more than 2 percent of worldwide electricity. The company is serving global coal demand from electricity generators and steelmakers, and is growing to serve new global customers and emerging Btu Conversion markets.
