POWDER RIVER COAL COMPANY
WWith coal seams up to 100 feet thick, ultra-low sulfur products and superior train-loading capabilities, Peabody Energy's Powder River Basin mines in Wyoming provide more than 100 million tons of coal each year for customers as far away as Georgia and New York. Peabody's three Powder River Basin mines operated at peak levels in 2007, shipping a record 161.5 million tons of coal to customers around the world.

The North Antelope Rochelle Mine - the largest and most productive mine in North America - shipped a new industry record of 91.5 million tons of low-sulfur coal. Investments in a world-class dragline, blending technology and conveyor systems at the mine have driven productivity while reducing costs. Located 65 miles south of Gillette, the facility daily loads up to 5,900 railcars. Trainloads of coal shipped from the mine would stretch from Los Angeles to Boston and back again.
Caballo Mine, which is located about 20 miles south of Gillette, shipped 31 million tons of coal in 2007, and the Rawhide Mine, located about 10 miles north of Gillette, shipped more than 17 million tons.
Peabody's Powder River mines are also among the safest in the nation. Employees at the North Antelope Rochelle Mine earned honors as Wyoming's safest surface mine in 2007 for the third year in a row.

While the Basin is known for its rich reserves, it's also an area where deer, antelope and other wildlife find their home. Peabody's reclamation program is driven by an enduring principle of balancing energy resource development with sound environmental stewardship. Within the Basin, our reclaimed land is typically two times more productive than native range.
The operations continue to be recognized for innovative approaches to stewardship that restore superior rangeland, magnificent wildlife preserves and pristine wetlands. In 2005, the North Antelope Rochelle Mine was awarded the U.S. Department of Interior Gold Good Neighbor Award for promoting best practices in environmental conservation and mining education. The award also recognized Peabody employees for working with area students to restore riparian habitat, and promote mining education through career days and mine tours.
