Peabody in the Powder River Basin

With coal seams up to 100 feet thick, ultra-low sulfur products and superior train-loading capabilities, Peabody Energy's three mines in Wyoming's Powder River Basin provide more than 100 million tons of coal each year for customers in the United States and around the world. The operations are also known for industry-leading safety and reclaimation practices that have been recognized with numerous awards over the past five years. For example, our North Antelope Rochelle Mine, has earned Sentinels of Safety honors from the U.S. Department of Labor for operating the safest U.S. surface mine, and the land we have restored throughout the Basin is typically two times more productive than native range.

Powder River Rail Loop The North Antelope Rochelle Mine - the largest and most productive mine in North America - shipped a new industry record of 97.5 million tons of compliance coal in 2008 and more than one billion tons since the mine began. Investments in a world-class dragline, blending technology and conveyor systems at the mine have driven productivity while reducing costs. Located 65 miles south of Gillette, the mine currently employs a work force of approximately 1,080 people and directly injects $63 million into the regional economy every year in the form of wages and benefits.

Caballo Mine, which is located about 20 miles south of Gillette, shipped 31 million tons of coal in 2008; the Rawhide Mine, located about 10 miles north of Gillette, shipped nearly 18.5 million tons last year.
