MIDWEST OPERATIONS

Peabody's founder and namesake gained a foothold in the industry in 1883 by plying the streets of Chicago with a wagon full of coal. Today, Peabody's Midwest operations include mines in Indiana and Illinois operated by our affiliates and subsidiaries. We have a large reserve position and sold more than any other Midwestern coal producer in 2007.

Coal is shipped primarily to electricity generators in the midwestern United States and to industrial customers for power generation. The Midwest operations include our Arclar, Coulterville Coal and Black Beauty subsidiaries.
