Safety is central to Peabody Energy’s mission. Every day, we strive to operate incident free… with zero injuries, occupational illnesses, property damage and near-misses.
- Peabody has made remarkable progress. The past year was the safest in Peabody’s 125-year history. Our U.S. operations reported a 1.70 safety rate, outperforming the industry average by more than 60 percent.
- U.S. and Australia employees earned more than 10 major awards for safety excellence and emergency preparedness last year alone.
- Our Farmersburg Mine in Indiana set the pace among surface operations by achieving zero incidents, results Farmersburg employees achieved twice in the past three years.
- Our Francisco Mine in Indiana achieved a 2.52 incident rate, the company’s best underground performance, which is 44 percent better than the average of peers.
- U.S. and Australia employees earned 11 industry awards for excellence in safety and emergency preparedness.
 Personal accountability is key to our success. Every employee commits to the safety vision and governing principles, and managers, front-line supervisors and employees are held responsible for their own safety and the safety of each other. Hundreds of safety observations are conducted daily across the company to recognize best practices and immediately correct unsafe acts. These observations are tracked and shared through a mine management safety system.
Peabody conducts state-of-the-art training that exceeds federal and state mandates and collaborates with the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and other government agencies to identify and test promising safety technologies.
Still, Peabody's more than 7,000 employees will not rest until every operation achieves a perfect safety record.
