More than 20 years before land restoration was required by law, Peabody Energy launched "Operation Green Earth," an ambitious program to establish everything from wildlife habitat to prime farmland on mined lands.

 

Such excellence in stewardship continues to be core to Peabody’s mission, which requires us to return mined land to a condition that is equal to or better than before mining occurred. Every year, our environmental committee and a dedicated staff of corporate and field environmental experts make this vision a reality.

 

Environmental initiatives begin before any mining activity starts. Detailed post-mining plans are researched, designed and approved. Contemporaneous land restoration during mining ensures the smallest active area for mining operations. And Peabody implements good neighbor practices to ensure that we respond to our neighbors’ needs and operate in harmony with local communities. Each year, Peabody's land restoration efforts are recognized with a number of state, regional, national and international honors, including more than 25 major awards in the past three years.
