Viking Mine-Corning Pit
The Viking Mine in Daviess County, Ind., shipped 1.3 million tons of coal in 2012, which was trucked to electricity generating and industrial customers including Indianapolis Power & Light, and Hoosier Energy, Eli Lilly & Company and Duke Energy.
Viking Mine is a surface mine that uses truck and shovel fleets, and dozer push to remove overburden. Coal is transported to the preparation plant for crushing and processing. The mine’s workforce of approximately 110 work on two shifts per day, seven days a week year-round. Six different seams of coal are mined. Viking has 2 million tons of assigned recoverable reserves.
