Metropolitan Mine is an underground coal mining operation located near Helensburgh, producing coking coal. The mine sold 1.4 million tons in 2013.
Coal extracted from the underground longwall mining operation is transferred by conveyor to the major surface facilities area. The mine produces coking coal, the majority of which is transported by train to the Port Kembla Coal Terminal for shipping to domestic and overseas customers. A small proportion of the coal is also transported by truck to the Coalcliff and Corrimal Coke Works - approximately 10 kilometers and 30 kilometers, respectively.
Metropolitan secures direct and indirect employment for some 1,900 people, including 320 mine site workers. Metropolitan’s nearly 130-year history, its location nestled amongst the second oldest national park in the world, and its ability to innovate to meet its technical and environmental challenges make the operation truly unique. The operation has approvals for another 20 years, with a major expansion project underway.
