Wilpinjong Mine is located in the developing western coalfields of New South Wales and produces a high-quality thermal coal. The mine sold 13.7 million tons in 2013.
With an average strip ratio for the life of the mine of around 2:1, Wilpinjong is one of the lowest-cost coal mining operations in Australia. Approval for Wilpinjong was granted in February 2006, and first coal was railed from the site in October the same year. Peabody purchased the mine in the fourth quarter 2006.
Wilpinjong produces a high-quality thermal coal. Its principal domestic customer is Macquarie Generation. Export coal is shipped to customers in the Asia Pacific area through Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group and Port Waratah Coal Services at Newcastle.
