Wilpinjong Funds Endangered Species Rescue Efforts

Peabody Energy’s Wilpinjong Mine funded a project to save the endangered Regent Honeyeater and Wilpinjong Funds Endangered Species Rescue Effortsimprove the Red Hill Environmental Education Centre. Red Hill Environmental Education Centre aims to provide students with learning experiences that will promote understanding and respect to all aspects of nature and the environment. More than 250 native plants that provide habitat and food for the Regent Honeyeater were planted at Red Hill’s regeneration center.

Wilpinjong Raises $25,000 for Mudgee Charities

Peabody Energy’s Wilpinjong Mine and nine of its contractor companies helped raise over $25,000 for Mudgee charities at the 2012 Peabody Energy Black Nugget Cup. The Black Nugget Cup is an annual fundraising horse race which takes place in the Mudgee region of New South Wales, Australia. The mine presented donations to local organizations including Pioneer House to upgrade their aged care facility, Mudgee Ambulance to help buy resuscitation mannequins, and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse to establish a world-class cancer treatment facility.

   

Wilpinjong Helps PCYC Keep Cool

Peabody Energy’s Wilpinjong Mine donated andPeabody Energy’s Wilpinjong Mine donated and installed two new air conditioners to Mudgee Police and Community Youth Club's (PCYC) Kids Care installed two new air conditioners to Mudgee Police and Community Youth Club's (PCYC) “Kids Care” after the PCYC’s unit died in the middle of the summer. Wilpinjong’s Environment and Community Manager, Kieren Bennetts said, “The PCYC runs some fantastic programs that give kids an opportunity to develop new skills.” 

   

Metropolitan Mine Surfing Fundraiser

In 2011, Peabody’s Metropolitan Mine surfing team achieved top honors at the Southern District Surfing Championship, with the purpose of raising funds to Metropolitan Mine Surfing Fundraiser - men in hard hatsbenefit a young apprentice who is recovering from severe injuries sustained in a motor bike accident. Metropolitan Mine’s team of more than 20 surfers remains undefeated since the annual contest began in 2006. Funds raised by Peabody’s employees previously have been used to purchase a resuscitation trolley for Wollongong Hospital to replace its 25-year-old machine.

   

Peabody Plants Partnerships in Australia

Singleton Public School students, near Peabody’s Wambo Mine, now better understand life science through the planting and watering of plants in an EnviroSmart program, an initiative funded by Peabody as a member of the New South Wales Minerals Council. The environmental project will help finance the school’s purchase of seasonal vegetable seeds and gardening equipment.

   

Recycled Materials from Wilpinjong Mine Create Secret Garden

Recycled Materials from Wilpinjong Mine Create Secret GardenPeabody’s Wilpinjong Mine donated dozens of olive trees, laundry tubs, old gates and other materials to transform a plot of land into a community garden for residents at Pioneer House, an aged-care home in Mudgee, New South Wales. Called the “Secret Garden,” the project provides elderly residents and their families with a serene outdoor oasis.

   

Metropolitan Mine Honored with Dual Awards

Peabody Energy’s Metropolitan Mine was honored by the New South Wales Minerals Council with a 2011 Environmental and Community Excellence Award for a first-of-its-kind initiative to recycle coal mine waste rock into abandoned underground mine workings. Peabody’s innovative approach to permanent storage for these products was also recognized with the organization’s People’s Choice Award. The initiative will deliver environmental and community benefits by significantly reducing the need to haul the material in trucks on local public roads and the need for storage in surface facilities.
