Coppabella Mine

The Coppabella Mine is an open-cut mine located 160 kilometers west of Mackay that produces low-volatile pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal.

Peabody Energy has a 73 percent interest in Coppabella through its Peabody Energy Australia PCI (formerly Macarthur Coal Limited) subsidiary.  Coppabella is a dragline and pre-strip operation and is managed and operated by Peabody. 

Coppabella is recognized as being one of the fastest coal mine developments in Australia and has a workforce of approximately 360 people, including contractors.

Coppabella sold 2.9 million tons in 2015.

At Coppabella, rehabilitation is undertaken as soon as possible after mining occurs. In 2015, the total area of completed rehabilitation at Coppabella was 320 hectares.


Coppabella has a strong culture of community engagement and corporate social responsibility and provides ongoing support to community services, local emergency services, education, safety and environmental management.
