Moorvale Mine

The Moorvale Mine is an open-cut mine located 156 kilometers south west of Mackay that produces low-volatile pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal, coking coal and thermal coal. 

Moorvale coal mine produces low-volatile pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal, coking coal and thermal coal for export markets. Peabody has a 73 percent interest in Moorvale through its Peabody Energy Australia PCI (formerly Macarthur Coal Limited) subsidiary.  The mine has a workforce of approximately 250 people, including contractors.

Moorvale is an excavator and strip/terrace operation, and is managed by Peabody with its mining operations carried out on a contractor basis by Leighton Contractors Pty Limited.

Moorvale sold 2.3 million tons of coal in 2015.

At Moorvale Mine, rehabilitation is undertaken as soon as practicable after disturbance occurs. In 2015, the total area under rehabilitation at Moorvale was 383 hectares.


Community programs and events supported by Moorvale include support for Nebo’s community newspaper the Nebo News, the Brigalow Athletics Carnival and Yalari, a not-for-profit organisation providing educational opportunities for Indigenous children.
