Surface environmental impacts are relatively low as North Goonyella is an underground operation. Mine personnel undertake repairs to surface expressions of subsidence as required. Due to the nature of North Goonyella’s coal, it tends to be associated with relatively high methane levels. The possibility of electricity generation from the coal bed methane is currently being explored.
North Goonyella is involved in a range of sponsorships and community activities which have included the Royal Flying Doctors Angel Flight and general support for a number of local schools.
Community consultation is an ongoing priority and North Goonyella representatives communicate regularly with stakeholders, such as local grazers and representatives from Isaac Regional Council.
