Peabody Position Statement on Proposed Clean Energy Standard for St. Louis
St. Louis and Missouri enjoy some of the lowest electricity costs in the nation, benefiting from a resilient and reliable energy portfolio with diversity of fuels. We caution against artificial renewable standards that will increase costs and reduce reliability. Consider California, which is transitioning to renewables, where consumers pay nearly 60 percent more to power their homes than we do in Missouri. Technology is the better approach for environmental improvements. Since 1970, key U.S. regulated emission rates decreased nearly 92 percent as coal used for electricity has increased 75 percent.
